What It Does

Layer Memo adds a notes panel to After Effects where you can attach text notes directly to individual layers and compositions. Click any note and the plugin opens the right comp and selects the layer automatically. All notes are stored inside the .aep file itself using After Effects’ native settings storage, so there are no sidecar files, no broken links, and no external dependencies.

Key Features

Layer-level notes. Notes attach to a specific layer and comp, not just the project in general. When you reopen a complex project weeks later, every note points exactly where you left it.

One-click navigation. Clicking a note in the panel jumps straight to the correct composition and selects the layer, even inside deeply nested project structures.

Tag system. Color-coded tags like #todo, #client, #bug, and #done let you categorize notes at a glance and filter them quickly.

Resolve and archive. Mark notes as done without deleting them. Useful for tracking client revision requests through to completion without losing the history.

Project-wide search. Filter all notes across the entire project instantly, handy on large multi-comp jobs.

Stats bar. A summary bar shows open, resolved, and todo counts so you can see at a glance where a project stands.

Saves inside the .aep. No external files to manage. Share or archive the project file and the notes travel with it.

Who It’s For

Freelancers tracking client revisions layer by layer will get the most immediate value. It also fits handoff situations where one designer needs to leave context for another editor picking up the project. Studios working on long-form projects with multiple editors will find the tag and search system worth the price on its own. And honestly, it’s useful for anyone who has ever reopened their own project after a few weeks and had no idea why a layer was set up a certain way.
