What It Does

Screen Equalizer corrects uneven chroma key backgrounds by comparing your footage to a clean plate reference. Instead of fighting wrinkles, lighting variations, or other greenscreen defects with multiple keying passes or manual rotoscoping, you point it at a clean shot of your backdrop and let it normalize the color across your footage. This often enables single-click keying with tools like Keylight or Primatte.

The plugin applies industry-standard screen leveling methods to make your chroma key surface appear uniformly lit and colored, even when the physical screen wasn’t perfect during the shoot.

Key Features

Clean plate-based correction. Select a reference frame showing just your greenscreen without actors or props, and Screen Equalizer uses it to even out variations across your keyed footage.

8/16/32-bit color support. Works in all After Effects color depths, preserving precision for compositing workflows that rely on overbright values or high bit-depth rendering.

Get Sample Color button (CC 2015+). After selecting your clean plate layer from the dropdown, click this button to automatically populate the sample color field with the correct screen tone. Older versions required manual color picking.

Semi-automated interface. The controls are straightforward: choose your clean plate, sample the screen color, and apply. Most shots require minimal tweaking beyond that.

Who It’s For

Useful for editors working with less-than-ideal greenscreen footage. If you’re dealing with wrinkled backdrops, uneven lighting, or inconsistent screen color across a shot, this plugin can save hours compared to multipass keying or rotoscoping fixes. Particularly helpful for indie productions where perfect lighting setups aren’t always available.

Works as a pre-keying step. Apply Screen Equalizer first to normalize your greenscreen, then use your preferred keyer on the corrected footage.
