What It Does

Random Layer Selector picks a random subset of layers from your After Effects composition or current selection. Instead of choosing uniformly, it uses a nested filtering approach where each pass progressively narrows the pool. You get four density options: most layers (one filtering pass), many layers (two passes), not many layers (three passes), or very few layers (four passes). This makes the randomization feel more natural and gives you control over how sparse or dense your selection becomes.

If you start with no layers selected, it works across the entire comp. If you’ve already selected some layers, it refines that group, similar to how NthLayerSelector operates. It’s straightforward, no complex settings, just numbered options for selection density.

Key Features

Nested random selection. The plugin doesn’t pick layers in one shot. It applies multiple rounds of filtering based on your choice, which avoids the uniform feel of a single random pass. One round gives you most layers, four rounds leaves you with very few.

Works on comps or existing selections. You can apply it to all layers in your composition, or use it to further filter a subset you’ve already picked. This flexibility is useful when you’re testing different randomization patterns or want to isolate layers within a group.

Simple numbered interface. Four options correspond to filtering intensity. No sliders, no percentages. You pick a number and the plugin does the rest.

Who It’s For

Useful for motion designers who need quick randomization in their comps, whether for testing different animation setups, creating organic patterns, or isolating layers without manually picking through dozens of items. If you work with large compositions and want a faster way to grab a random subset for experimentation, this tool removes the tedium.

It’s also helpful for workflows where you need to repeat random selections, like testing multiple animation variations or setting up procedural effects that benefit from non-uniform layer groups.

Pricing

Random Layer Selector uses a pay-what-you-want model. You decide the price, which makes it accessible if you’re trying it out or working with a tight budget. No recurring fees, no subscription. Once you pay, you own it.
