What It Does
qp_ChromaSubsample simulates the chroma subsampling process used in video encoding to help CG renders integrate with real-world footage. When video is compressed for formats like DV or HDCAM, the encoder deliberately discards color information in a process often called “visually lossless.” Perfect CG renders lack these artifacts, making them stand out against video backplates. This plugin replicates that degradation.
Apply it post-grain and color correction in your final comp. Feed in your video backplate as Input 2, and the plugin subsamples both the CG element and plate together for better integration. You can also use it as a retro effect, particularly with the VHeSque mode.
Key Features
Five sampling rates match different video formats: 4:2:2 for Digibeta and Rec.601/709, 4:2:0 for PAL DV, 4:1:1 for NTSC DV and DVCPro, 3:1:1 for HDCAM, and VHeSque for a digital approximation of VHS quality.
High and low quality sampling options let you balance processing speed against accuracy. High quality uses complex low-pass filtering for better results but slower rendering.
Output modes include RGB (default) or YCbCr to view how the plugin affects chroma components. The YCbCr mode shows exactly what’s happening to color information during subsampling.
Input 2 backplate workflow processes both your CG and the original plate through the same subsampling, ensuring consistent degradation across composited elements.
Who It’s For
This is an integration tool for VFX compositors working with video backplates. The results are subtle by design, especially at higher quality settings. It’s meant to bring perfect CG down to the level of DV, HDCAM, or other compressed video formats. If you’re compositing onto film plates, RED footage, or HDCAM SR at 4:4:4, you won’t need this.
Useful for anyone matching CG to footage shot on older broadcast or prosumer formats, or for creating period-appropriate VHS effects.
Pricing
This is a pay-what-you-want plugin with a suggested minimum of $29.99. Individual users can set their own price. Businesses and teams must pay the suggested amount for a valid license.
Compatibility note: This plugin only works with After Effects CS4 and CS5. It’s not compatible with CS6 or later versions, as it relies on the older Pixel Bender plugin architecture.
