What It Does

OCD Renamer scans your layer stack and renames layers based on their properties: applied effects, parent-child relationships, matte connections, or matte types. Instead of manually typing “Gaussian Blur” or “Alpha Matte,” the plugin reads the layer’s structure and updates names automatically. Works on selected layers or across the entire project.

Key Features

Selection and global modes. Rename just your selected layers or process every layer in the project at once.

Replace, prefix, or suffix. Choose whether the plugin overwrites the layer name entirely, adds text before it, or appends text after. Control+click applies as prefix, Alt+click as suffix.

Custom aliases for effects. Tired of typing “Hue/Saturation”? Create shortcuts like “HSL” or “H/S” in preferences. Same for matte types: “Alpha Inverted” becomes “Alpha Inv” or whatever you prefer.

Duplicate name filtering. If a layer has multiple instances of the same effect, OCD Renamer intelligently drops redundant names from the output.

Preferences panel. Control naming patterns, separators, alias lists, and other behaviors. The trial version locks this out and limits you to one layer at a time to preview functionality.

Who It’s For

Useful for motion designers managing complex compositions with dozens of layers. If you’ve ever spent time manually naming adjustment layers by their effect stack or tracking down which layer is the alpha matte for another, this speeds that up. Particularly helpful in collaborative projects where consistent naming saves confusion.

Pricing

One-time purchase: $9.95. No subscription. A trial version is available, but it disables preferences and only renames one layer per operation.
