What It Does
Friction generates abstract, animated letterforms built around a geometric core. The typeface uses shape layers to create fluttering, organic motion through multiple graphic elements. Each character combines a minimalistic geometric base with two secondary layers of abstract shapes.
The typeface is no longer available for purchase but was previously offered as pay-what-you-want, with users naming their own price.
Key Features
Three-color customization. Control color values for the geometric core and secondary layers independently.
Secondary element toggle. Animate the secondary graphic layers in or out using a checkbox control.
JSX format. The lightweight JSX format integrates with Font Manager for typing animated text directly in comps. Also includes standard .aep files with all characters as shape layers.
Static OTF typeface. Includes a free static version (downloadable at Friction.dk) with layers acting as weights, enabling three-color compositions in standard design software.
Infinitely scalable. Built entirely with shape layers, so characters scale without quality loss. Expressions are exposed for custom modifications.
Supports uppercase letters, extended Latin characters (ÀÁÂÃ, etc.), numbers, and punctuation. Compatible with After Effects 2020–2024.
Who It’s For
Useful for title sequences, motion graphics, or anywhere you need letterforms with an intentionally distorted, graphic appearance. Works well with the free Animography Controller for dragging characters into comps and Font Manager for typing text with size, tracking, and time offset controls.
