What It Does
Fractal Volume generates true 3D fractal noise that exists in space rather than on a flat plane. Because the noise has genuine depth, you can fly a camera through it, and it will respond correctly, making it useful for volumetric cloud effects, starfields, fog, and abstract space environments. Lights in your composition also affect the noise, with adjustable shading and material quality controlling how the effect responds.
Developed by grape design, the plugin is GPU-accelerated and compatible with After Effects 2023 through 2026.
Key Features
True 3D noise. Unlike After Effects’ built-in Fractal Noise, which is a flat 2D texture, Fractal Volume calculates noise across all three axes. Camera movement through the volume produces parallax and depth that reads naturally.
5 fractal types and 4 noise types. Choosing different combinations produces very different results, from wispy cloud-like structures to dense turbulent fields. A Sub Noise option adds a secondary layer of detail on top of the primary noise.
Loopable animations with phase control. The noise can be set to loop cleanly, which matters for motion graphics work where a seamless background or texture is needed.
Crop controls along X, Y, and Z axes. You can isolate the noise volume to a specific region of space rather than letting it fill the entire comp, useful for placing a cloud bank at a specific depth or framing a contained effect.
Adjustable Map Depth, noise density, and render quality. These controls let you balance visual complexity against render time, which is helpful when iterating on a look before committing to a final quality pass.
Light response. Place standard After Effects lights in your scene and the noise will shade accordingly, giving the volume a sense of directionality and form.
Who It’s For
Fractal Volume is most useful for motion designers and compositors who need volumetric-style effects without a 3D application. Cloud fly-throughs, atmospheric backgrounds, nebula or space visuals, and abstract textured environments are the natural use cases. The looping capability makes it practical for broadcast and motion graphics where cycling backgrounds are common.
Pricing
