What It Does
Fixel ALCE 2 AE applies advanced local auto-levels to images, adjusting tonal range on a localized basis rather than globally. Instead of stretching contrast across the entire frame, it applies an ‘S’ curve to small groups of pixels, optimizing tonal range locally. This preserves detail and avoids the dull, uniform look that global auto-levels produce. The result is images with optimized local whites and blacks, revealing fine detail and producing what the developers call a distinct “3D look.”
This is not a sharpening filter. While tools like Unsharp Mask emphasize edges and structure, ALCE optimizes the tonality of local pixel groups without introducing halos or over-saturation.
Key Features
Radius Control. The primary parameter controls the size of the pixel group for local auto-levels. Small radius values (LoRaHiAm) emphasize crisp local tones and fine detail. Large radius values (HiRaLoAm) work on broader surfaces and approach the effect of global auto-levels. Adjusting this one slider produces a range of contrast styles.
Local Algorithm. The plugin applies an ‘S’ curve locally to groups of pixels, avoiding the tonal corruption and artifacts typical of conventional shadow/highlight filters.
Multi-CPU Acceleration. Processing is accelerated across multiple CPU cores for faster previews and renders.
