What It Does

EFX Uniqueness detects pixels that appear in-focus, functioning as an advanced edge-finding filter. It analyzes your footage and identifies areas of sharpness, then outputs that information in formats useful for compositing and masking work.

Note: This plugin has been discontinued and is not compatible with After Effects CS6 or later versions. It only works with CS5.5, CS5, and CS4.

Key Features

Three output modes. The plugin can render results as an edge overlay directly on your footage, a black-and-white matte, or an alpha channel. This gives you flexibility in how you integrate the effect into your composite.

Enhanced edge detection. It goes beyond standard edge-finding filters by specifically identifying areas that appear in-focus. The plugin analyzes sharpness rather than just contrast changes.

Multiple applications. Beyond basic edge detection, you can use it to simulate in-camera focus indicators (like those on video monitors), create drawing or painting filters, or in some cases extract in-focus subjects from blurred backgrounds.

Who It’s For

This plugin is best suited for compositors working with older After Effects versions (CS5.5 and earlier) who need more control over edge detection than native filters provide. It can help isolate focused elements in footage or create stylized edge-based effects.

Pricing

EFX Uniqueness uses a pay-what-you-want model. You can name your own price when downloading it. However, the plugin is no longer actively sold or supported since it’s been discontinued.
