What It Does
Processes Z-Depth passes (grayscale maps storing pixel distance from camera in 3D renders) for depth-based compositing in After Effects. Instead of re-rendering your 3D scene every time you need to adjust layer stacking or create depth-based selections, these plugins let you manipulate the compositing using the depth information already baked into your render pass.
Key Features
The package includes three plugins, each targeting a specific depth-based task:
Z_Depth Compose. Composites two layers based on their depth maps. If you have two separate 3D renders with overlapping depth ranges, this plugin correctly orders the pixels by their distance from camera, even if they’re on separate layers.
Z_Depth Cut. Selects pixels based on depth thresholds. Useful for isolating objects at specific distances from the camera or creating depth-based masks without rotoscoping. Set a near and far threshold, and it generates a selection of everything within that depth range.
Z_Depth Shadow. Projects a layer onto a depth map. When you need a shadow or graphic element to deform realistically across 3D surfaces, this plugin uses the depth information to warp the layer as if it’s wrapping around the geometry.
Who It’s For
Motion designers working with 3D render passes who need more control over compositing after the render is complete. If you’re frequently adjusting how CG elements stack or trying to match graphics to 3D surfaces, these plugins save you from round-tripping back to your 3D application.
Pricing
$14.99 for the Z-Depth Tools package. If you later want the full EFX Render Elements Plugin Suite ($49.99), you get full credit for this purchase toward the upgrade.
