What It Does

Autostereogram generates animated single-image stereograms, optical illusions that create the perception of depth from a flat 2D image. Feed it a depth map and optional texture, and it outputs those classic “magic eye” images where hidden 3D shapes emerge when you cross your eyes or adjust your focus.

The plugin works entirely inside After Effects. You create depth maps using built-in AE tools (like fractal noise or displacement maps), then Autostereogram processes them into stereogram patterns. The results can be animated, making it viable for motion graphics and music videos, not just static images.

Key Features

Depth map input. Uses After Effects layers as depth maps to define the 3D structure of your stereogram. Animate the depth map and the stereogram animates with it.

Texture options. Generate patterns from noise (monochrome or colored) or import your own fixed or animated textures. Built-in presets include a 3D rabbit generated from noise and a colored noise dragon.

Post-processing controls. Apply blur or sharpen to the final output directly in the plugin interface.

Apple Silicon native. Runs natively on M1/M2 Macs for better performance.

The plugin includes tutorial content by Jared Raab and Luca Tarantini, who directed a music video for SUUNS using the effect.

Who It’s For

Motion designers looking for unusual visual effects, particularly in experimental or retro-styled projects. Useful if you’re creating psychedelic visuals, music videos, or content that plays with perception. Less practical for client work unless the brief specifically calls for stereogram effects.

Pricing

Autostereogram uses pay-what-you-want pricing. The suggested price is $19.99, but you can name your own amount. A fully functional free trial is available, though it overlays a red cross on output until you register. Educational discounts (50% off) available for students and faculty.
