What It Does
AE Actions is a ScriptUI panel for After Effects that works like a macro recorder. You make changes in After Effects, and AE Actions captures every step as a discrete, editable action. Later, you replay that sequence on any composition, selected layers, or your entire project in a single click.
The concept is borrowed from Photoshop Actions, but built around how After Effects actually works: layer timing, property changes, keyframes, effects, expressions, and comp-level settings are all fair game.
Key Features
Smart Recording. When you hit record, AE Actions takes a snapshot of your comp and then tracks every change you make as a diff. Properties, effects, keyframe values, layer order, in/out points — all captured as individual steps you can inspect and reorder later.
Instant Playback. Apply a recorded action set to the active comp, only selected layers, or a specific target comp from a dropdown. One click runs the whole sequence.
Batch Processing. Apply any action set across every composition in your project at once. Useful for applying consistent styling, timing offsets, or effect settings across a large project without touching each comp manually.
Action Libraries. Export individual action sets as .aeact files, or export your full library as .aeactlib. These can be shared with a team or moved between machines, making it practical for studio environments with repeating project types.
Effect Remapping. If a recorded action references an .ffx preset file that’s missing on another machine, the built-in remapper lets you reconnect it visually, with auto-indexing and manual path overrides.
Step Inspector. After recording, you can review each captured step, delete unwanted ones, reorder them, and add notes. Merging multiple recording takes into one action set is also supported.
Keyboard Shortcuts. Full keyboard control for recording (R), stopping (S), playback (P), and step reordering keeps you in the panel without reaching for the mouse.
Who It’s For
AE Actions is most useful for motion designers who repeat the same multi-step processes across many comps or projects. Think recurring animation rigs, standard effect chains applied to dozens of layers, or consistent timeline restructuring across a large edit. It’s also a practical tool for teams that want to share standardized workflows without relying on templates alone.
Pricing
AE Actions is a one-time purchase at $19.99 (regular price $29.99). Licensed per machine via the aescripts licensing system. A free trial is available on the product page. Compatible with After Effects CC 2019 through 2026 on Mac and Windows.
