What It Does

xCloner creates copies of layers using five cloning modes: Linear, Radial, Grid, Path, and Object. Instead of duplicating layers manually, you define a pattern and xCloner generates the clones for you. Path mode lets you draw masks and clone along their shapes. Object mode uses a source layer’s alpha or luma channel to determine where clones appear.

The plugin handles performance differently than standard duplication. According to the developer’s benchmark, cloning 320 4K layers takes 0.2 seconds per frame with xCloner, versus 15 seconds with script duplication or 25 seconds with expressions.

Key Features

Path Cloning. Draw or paste masks and clone directly along their paths. You can distribute clones by count, distance, or vertex position. Options include cloning on individual masks or all masks combined, looping along paths, and setting rotation to follow path direction.

Object Cloning. Clone based on any source layer’s alpha or luma channel. Fine-tune with resolution and threshold controls to place clones where the source layer has content.

Linear, Radial, and Grid Modes. Linear mode creates rows of clones. Radial mode arranges clones in a circle. Grid mode creates a two-dimensional array. Each mode includes transformation controls, randomization, and offset options.

Custom Layer Selection. Choose up to 20 custom layers for cloning. Set transformation, blending mode, and visibility for each.

Time Offset Controls. Offset clone timing for staggered animations. Reverse offset order if needed.

The plugin supports multiframe rendering and works with 32-bit color. It’s compatible with After Effects CS6 and above on both Mac and Windows.

Who It’s For

Useful for motion graphics work involving repetitive elements: title sequences with repeating patterns, geometric backgrounds, particle-style effects without particle systems, or any design requiring controlled duplication. If you’re manually duplicating and positioning dozens of layers, this automates the process.

Pricing

xCloner costs $99.99 for a single-user license. Floating server and render-only licenses are available at different price points. A trial version is available for testing before purchase.
