What It Does

Variable Diffusion emulates in-camera light scattering using a proprietary algorithm that mimics expensive glass filters. The plugin was designed to augment VFX composites, enhance skin and faces, and add expressive color treatments. It was discontinued and only ran on Mac OS X 10.6.8 and higher.

Key Features

Optically correct light scattering. The plugin uses a proprietary algorithm that emulates real in-camera light behavior, providing a more naturalistic alternative to traditional light wrap methods in VFX compositing. The algorithm was developed by a professional cinematographer/colorist and a PhD imaging scientist.

Expression-driven masks. Masks can be fine-tuned and animated with expressions, providing control over where diffusion is applied.

Skin enhancement presets. Over 90 presets target different skin issues: wrinkles, blemishes, uneven skin tone, shininess, and tanning. Novelty presets create zombie, ghastly, or cartoon looks.

Stylized look presets. Variable Diffusion includes color presets that differ from standard “look” plugins, with the ability to dial down intensity for professional work. For animators, this meant quickly creating multiple client options by varying mood through color instead of redesigning and re-animating.

16-bit workflow support. The plugin was recommended for use in 16-bit per channel mode with “Linearize Working Space” enabled, though it functioned in 32-bit float post-compositing.

Who It’s For

VFX artists looking to improve composites with realistic light scattering, colorists working on skin retouching or stylized grades, and motion designers needing quick color variations for client approvals.

Pricing

Variable Diffusion sold for $5.99 (reduced from $7.99) as a one-time purchase before being discontinued. The product is no longer available for purchase.
