What It Does
Smart Posterizer scans source footage or layers (precomps, shapes, SWF, PNG, MOV) and detects visual changes in the animation. It then uses those changes to control time posterization on other properties, matching frame rates precisely to keyframed properties like effects. Unlike the standard Posterize Time effect, which uses a fixed rate, this script adapts to exactly match your source animation.
Version 2.1 adds beta functionality to automatically pin textures to moving objects in rendered animation, including squash and stretch. This lets you move textures or other elements with your animated renders from other software without manually adding position keyframes.
Key Features
Analyze Source. Scan source footage and posterize any keyframed property, including effects, to match it exactly. The script detects frame-by-frame changes in your animation and applies that timing to other properties.
Posterize Properties. Apply posterization to layers and properties based on source changes. This is more precise than the built-in Posterize Time effect because it matches the source animation instead of using a fixed frame rate.
One-Click Bake to Keyframes. Bake posterization expressions to keyframes across all layers in your comp without affecting other expressions on your layers. This gives you full control over the timing while keeping your project clean.
Preset Frame-Rate Layers. Create editable presets for posterizing on 2s, 3s, 4s, and other common animation intervals. This speeds up workflows where you regularly work with specific frame rates.
Expression Cleanup. Remove expressions from selected properties in one click. Useful when you want to clean up your project after baking or testing different approaches.
Automatic Texture Pinning (Beta). Pin textures to moving objects in rendered animation, including squash and stretch. This feature tracks motion from other software and applies it in After Effects without manual keyframing.
Who It’s For
This script is useful for motion designers working with cel animation, mixed media projects, or animation imported from other software. If you’re matching frame rates between different layers, creating stop-motion effects, or working with animation on 2s, 3s, or 4s, Smart Posterizer automates what would otherwise be manual timing adjustments.
The texture pinning feature is particularly relevant for animators who render from 3D software or other animation tools and need to apply textures or effects in After Effects while preserving the original motion.
Pricing
Smart Posterizer costs $24.99 for a single-user license. Floating server licenses are available for studios. A trial version is available for download before purchase. Previous buyers may qualify for upgrade pricing when logged in.
