What It Does
Slice it Up divides a single layer into multiple segments by duplicating it and applying randomized or linear masks. Each slice becomes its own layer in a new composition, giving you granular control over offset, rotation, and expansion. The tool works procedurally, meaning you can regenerate slices or adjust parameters without losing keyframes or starting over.
Select a layer, set the number of slices, and click. The script creates a new comp with an effect controller that exposes animation parameters. From there, you can offset slices along X, Y, or Z axes, rotate them individually, or expand the masks. Useful for glitch effects, title reveals, or transitions that need precise control over layer segments.
Key Features
Unlimited slices. No cap on how many segments you can create from a single layer.
2D and 3D space. Switch between 2D and 3D modes to control depth and layering.
Randomization controls. Regenerate slice width, height, distribution, or axis direction at any point. If you don’t like how slices are positioned, hit randomize without affecting your keyframes.
Linear or random distribution. Choose whether slices spread evenly or scatter unpredictably across the comp.
Seed generation. Recall previous random seeds to recreate specific looks.
Mask expansion. Shrink or expand slice masks to adjust overlap or spacing.
Effect controller. All parameters live in a single effect panel. Animate X/Y/Z offsets, rotation, and expansion using familiar After Effects keyframing.
Who It’s For
Motion designers working on glitch effects, text reveals, or transitions that need segmented layers. Helpful if you’re building animations where individual slices move or rotate independently. Also works for visualizations where you need to break down footage into analyzable parts.
Pricing
This is a pay-what-you-want model. Set your own price when purchasing. A free trial is available, limited to 10 slices maximum.
If you bought version 1 after September 1, 2017, the upgrade to version 2 is free. Purchases before that date qualify for a $5 upgrade. A 20% discount applies if you own the Illustrator or Cinema 4D versions. Bundle discounts are available: 10% off for two versions, 20% off for all three.
