What It Does
ShapeMonkey generates procedural animations for shape layers through an expression-driven preset system. Instead of manually keyframing transforms for each shape element, you select from modular animation presets that build complex motion automatically. The plugin works with native shape layers, text, and imported vectors, handling everything from simple geometric transitions to multi-layer radial patterns.
Key Features
Modular animation system. Pick from preset shapes or use your own custom layers. The plugin applies animation logic through expressions rather than fixed keyframes, so you can adjust timing and values after the fact without rebuilding the animation.
Interpolation combinations. Dozens of easing and transition modes let you control how shapes morph and move. Stack multiple interpolation types to create layered motion, like a shape that scales in while rotating out.
Preset palettes with .ase import. Load color palettes from Adobe Swatch Exchange files or build your own. The palette controls can auto-animate color shifts across your shapes, synced to markers or running on a loop.
Radial array generation. Instantly duplicate shapes in circular patterns with adjustable spacing and rotation. Useful for sunbursts, loading icons, or kaleidoscopic effects.
Marker sync. Trigger animation events to comp markers. Drop markers on your timeline to match beats in music or transition points in a voiceover, and ShapeMonkey will fire shape changes at those exact frames.
Expression-driven masks. Fine-tune shape boundaries and animation ranges through masks controlled by expressions. Since they’re dynamic, you can animate the mask influence over time for progressive reveals or morphing cutouts.
Turbulence and drift. Add organic movement to procedural shapes with turbulence noise and drift parameters. Keeps geometric animations from feeling too rigid.
Who It’s For
Motion designers building title sequences, broadcast packages, or social media graphics where repeating shape patterns need quick iteration. Useful if you find yourself copy-pasting keyframes across dozens of shape layers, or if you want to experiment with animation timing without redoing manual work. Also practical for anyone unfamiliar with shape layer hierarchies, as the plugin handles the nesting structure for you.
