What It Does

RenderSmith is a CEP panel for After Effects that centralizes your entire render pipeline. Instead of juggling multiple tools or babysitting the render queue, you get proxies, pre-renders, background rendering, crash recovery, and project backups in a single panel. It targets motion designers and editors working on heavy projects where render failures or lost work are a real risk.

Key Features

Ghost Mode. Temporarily hides heavy layers with one click so you can preview the timeline at full frame rate. Toggle back before rendering without touching your layer structure.

Easy Proxy. Generates proxies in one click with automatic link-back to originals and batch processing across multiple comps. Outputs go into a managed _proxy/ folder next to your project file.

Easy PreRender. Bakes heavy nested precomps into lightweight intermediates and auto-links back to the source. You can re-render any time without manually relinking.

Final Render. Runs background aerender with live progress tracking. Auto-Versioning appends _v01, _v02 to output names so files are never overwritten. Image sequences with bracket notation are handled correctly.

Safe Mode. When aerender crashes, RenderSmith detects the failure and offers a one-click retry through a more stable codec path (ProRes or Lossless). A crash report identifies the suspected cause, including effect name and layer weight.

Quality Guard. Scans the work area before rendering for plugins known to cause silent failures with background aerender (Element 3D is the primary example). When detected, it automatically switches to AE’s internal renderer instead of silently producing wrong output.

Auto Backup. Before any structure-modifying operation, the panel silently snapshots your AEP. The 20 most recent backups are kept by default, configurable up to unlimited. Restore any version with one click from Settings. Runs asynchronously so it never blocks the panel.

Notifications. Send render-complete alerts to Discord, Slack, Telegram, or email. Messages include comp name, duration, and any error details.

Batch queue. Render multiple comps with live progress for the active comp and the waiting queue, including names and ETAs.

Who It’s For

Primarily useful for motion designers handling complex AE projects with heavy footage, GPU-intensive plugins, or tight delivery deadlines. If you regularly work with nested precomps, large image sequences, or Element 3D, the combination of Quality Guard, Safe Mode, and Auto Backup addresses problems that can otherwise cost hours of work.

Also practical for studios where render failures mid-session are a recurring problem and a structured recovery path matters more than a manual retry.

Pricing

RenderSmith is a one-time purchase at $49.99, available on aescripts. A free trial is available. Supports After Effects CC 2022 through 2026 on both Windows and macOS.
