What It Does
PuppetTools 3 handles two core rigging tasks: creating custom controllers for puppet pins, shape layers, masks, and layer positions, then setting up inverse kinematics between them. Select three layers, click Create IK, and you have a working IK chain. The tool works with Photoshop files, Illustrator artwork, PNGs, shape layers, and mask paths.
Key Features
One-click IK setup. Select any three layers in sequence and PuppetTools generates an IK system. You can apply this to layers that already have controllers or use it on plain layers.
Controller creation for multiple layer types. The tool creates expression-linked controllers for puppet pins, shape layer path points, mask paths, and layer positions. You can customize controller appearance (color, size), naming conventions, and whether to use nulls or solids as the controller type.
Shape layer and mask path support. Added in version 3.7, you can now create vertex controllers for shape layer paths and mask paths. This works in After Effects CC 2018 and later.
Straightforward interface. The entire tool operates through two main buttons: Create Controllers and Create IK. Settings let you adjust controller properties without digging through menus.
Who It’s For
Character animators who need a simpler alternative to complex rigging tools. The interface assumes you want to rig artwork quickly without learning a full rigging ecosystem. The included Lucy practice rig and tutorial project files help you understand the workflow before applying it to your own characters.
Pricing
PuppetTools 3 costs $39.99 for a single-user license. A trial version is available to test before purchasing.
