What It Does
Power Hyperboloid generates 3D hyperboloid surfaces (specifically hyperboloids of two sheets) directly in After Effects. It’s a GPU-accelerated effect that integrates with composition cameras and lights to produce shaded, self-shadowing geometry with reflections and depth of field.
The plugin is fully functional as pay-what-you-want freeware with a watermark. To remove the watermark, install the free trial versions of two companion plugins, Power Sphere and Power Cylinder. No license purchase required for those.
Key Features
Elliptic distortion and unfolding. Deform the hyperboloid shape, invert it, or unfold it into a flat plane. You can also extend the surface repeatedly for patterned effects.
Composition integration. The hyperboloid responds to After Effects composition lights and cameras, making it behave like native 3D geometry. Self-shadowing and reflections follow light positions.
Depth of field rendering. Render realistic camera-based DOF blur without needing third-party solutions.
GPU acceleration. Rendering uses graphics card processing for faster previews and final output.
Who It’s For
Motion designers working with abstract 3D shapes or technical visualizations. Useful for title sequences, broadcast graphics, or any project needing geometric forms that react to scene lighting.
Since it’s from the same developer as Power Sphere and Power Cylinder, the control layer setup is consistent across all three plugins. If you’ve used one, the others will feel familiar.
Pricing
Power Hyperboloid is pay-what-you-want freeware. The plugin works fully with a watermark. To remove the watermark at no cost, install the free trial versions of Power Sphere and Power Cylinder (no license required for those two).
Compatible with After Effects CS6 through 2026, including Apple Silicon and multi-threaded rendering support.
