What It Does
PointPosition C4D creates position point render passes that encode the XYZ coordinates of rendered points into RGB color channels. This enables 2.5D relighting workflows in compositing applications like Nuke and After Effects (using the Pixel Cloud plugin). While Maya includes this functionality natively, Cinema 4D does not, requiring manual shader setups with three separate ramps per channel. This plugin automates that entire process.
Key Features
Position data encoding. Converts 3D point positions from your Cinema 4D scene into color information, outputting 16-bit or 32-bit images required for accurate position data.
Direct export workflow. Install by dropping the plugin into your Cinema 4D plugins folder (R12 or higher). No material swapping or complex shader networks needed.
Compositing compatibility. Works with standard point cloud relighting tools in both Nuke and After Effects. For Nuke users, enable the “Invert X” option in the filter settings.
Technical Notes
Disable all anti-aliasing before rendering position passes. Anti-aliasing creates blended edge pixels that corrupt position data. The plugin cannot access pre-antialiasing render results due to Cinema 4D’s rendering architecture.
Who It’s For
Cinema 4D artists who composite renders in Nuke or After Effects and need to relight scenes in post. Particularly useful for projects where lighting changes after the 3D render stage.
