What It Does
OBJ Vertex Export converts After Effects layer positions into wavefront OBJ files containing vertex point clouds. This lets you transfer animation data from After Effects to 3D applications like Plexus, Trapcode Form, and Blender.
Select layers and run the script to export either the current frame or an entire sequence. The script calculates expression-driven movement and parented layer transformations, preserving your After Effects animation in a format external tools can read.
Key Features
Single-frame or sequence export. Uncheck “seq” to export current layer positions at the current time. Check it to export the entire workarea as an animation sequence.
Expression calculation. The script evaluates expressions before export, so keyframe-less procedural animations transfer correctly.
Parented layer support. Handles parent-child relationships, though complex hierarchies may need pre-baking with Bake Parented Transform by Blurrypixel.
OBJ compatibility notes. Files work immediately with Plexus. Trapcode Form reads them but has 3D space misalignment requiring offset adjustments. Video Copilot Element 3D cannot import these files since it requires face data, not just vertices. Blender imports the files as point clouds.
Who It’s For
Motion designers working between After Effects and 3D particle systems. Particularly useful if you animate positions in After Effects and want to visualize or render them in Plexus or other vertex-based tools. Not recommended if you need mesh geometry or Element 3D compatibility.
