What It Does

Monotize converts any text layer in After Effects to monospaced formatting, regardless of which font you’re using. The script works with any alignment setting and handles multiple line breaks. While originally sold standalone, it’s now part of the TYPE toolkit from AE Screens.

Key Features

Basic monospacing. Click a button to convert selected text to monospaced. A second button removes the effect. The spacing gets added as an effect, so you can adjust the character spacing value in the Effect Controls panel after applying it.

Variable spacers. Hold Shift while clicking the monospace button to add custom spacing for specific character ranges. You can set different spacing between different parts of your text, useful when mixing numbers with letters or creating custom kerning patterns.

Automatic cleanup. The script removes text strokes when applying monospacing since strokes aren’t supported by the technique. If your text layer has an expression applied, version 1.1 and later handle it correctly without breaking.

The technique was developed by AE Screens based on a method shared by Thor Sarup. It uses After Effects’ built-in spacing tools rather than creating outlines or rasterizing text, so your text remains fully editable.

Who It’s For

Useful for title animations where you need consistent character widths, especially with numbers or code-style text. Motion designers working with kinetic typography often need monospaced text for counting animations or technical interfaces.

If the alignment looks off after applying, check that your text layer kerning is set to Metrics instead of Optical.

Pricing

Monotize is no longer available as a standalone purchase. The original pricing was pay-what-you-want (suggested $29 for commercial use). The script is now included in TYPE, a larger text animation toolkit from the same developer.
