What It Does

Monoline Text generates single-stroke vector text in After Effects based on the Dr. A. V. Hershey simplex font from 1967. Text renders as shape layers, masks on solids, or motion paths. Each output method gives you different animation possibilities for the same monoline aesthetic.

The script adapts Jongware’s 2010 Illustrator version for After Effects with Hershey’s permission. The original font was designed for engraving, which makes it well-suited for line-based animation techniques.

Key Features

Three output modes. Shape layers for standard animation, masks on solids for fill effects, or null objects with motion paths for write-on animations. You can combine methods in the same project.

Layer organization options. Keep all characters on one layer, split by line, or separate every character into individual layers. Single-layer mode works for basic text blocks. Per-character splitting gives you granular control for staggered animations.

Text alignment. Left, center, and right alignment match standard text layer behavior. Point size adjusts character scale.

Motion path controls. When creating motion paths, the script can add roving keyframes automatically. This smooths velocity across the path without manual timing adjustments. Useful for write-on effects where the stroke speed should stay consistent.

Character preview. The ‘abc’ button inserts all available characters into the text field so you can see the full character set. Settings panel lets you define solid colors for mask mode.

Who It’s For

Useful for title animations that need a hand-drawn or technical look. The single-stroke design animates well with trim paths or stroke effects. Motion graphics designers working on instructional content, technical diagrams, or retro-styled projects will find the aesthetic fits those contexts.

Requires Scripts to Write Files permission in After Effects preferences, since the script generates UI button icons on disk.
