What It Does
mazeFX generates procedural vector mazes directly on After Effects shape layers. Each maze includes a unique solution path that you can animate, and the plugin automatically creates effect controls for adjusting appearance. You can use masks to define the maze boundary, making it possible to create circular, custom-shaped, or traditional rectangular mazes.
Key Features
Maze generation algorithm. Version 1.40 introduced a faster generation system that produces 60% fewer vertices and paths compared to earlier versions. A 30×30 grid maze now generates 579 paths instead of 1,801, which means cleaner project files and faster rendering.
Solution path system. Every maze generates an automatic solution with customizable start and end points. You can choose from 13 predefined positions (top left, center, bottom right, etc.) or let the plugin randomize them. The solution path can be animated using standard After Effects techniques.
Seed control. Version 1.46 added a seed value field and random seed checkbox. Set a specific seed number to reproduce the exact same maze layout across multiple comps or iterations. Useful when you need consistency or want to generate variations of a base design.
Mask support. mazeFX respects both linear and bezier masks (bezier support added in v1.1). Draw any shape, and the maze will conform to it. Combine this with effects like Polar Coordinates to create circular mazes, or CC Sphere for spherical maze surfaces.
Null helper layer. In After Effects CC 2018 and later, mazeFX can generate a null layer that tracks the tip of the solution path. This makes it simple to parent objects (like a character or icon) that follow the maze solution.
Grid controls. Adjust X and Y grid dimensions independently to create dense or sparse maze patterns. A lock button keeps proportions when you want a square grid.
Single or multiple layers. Choose whether to output all maze components (walls, solution path, start/end markers) onto one shape layer or split them into separate layers for individual control.
Who It’s For
Motion designers working on tech interfaces, HUDs, or sci-fi sequences will find mazeFX useful for adding procedural background elements. It’s also practical for anyone prototyping simple maze-based game maps or creating animated puzzle graphics. The plugin works well alongside other geometric tools like circuitFX or quadrateFX from the same developer.
Since everything outputs as shape layers, you have full access to After Effects’ native stroke, fill, trim paths, and expression controls. No external rendering or rasterization required.
Pricing
mazeFX costs $29.99 for a single-user license. A floating server license is available for larger teams. The developer (Real Creations) offers occasional bundle discounts when purchasing mazeFX alongside other tools like circuitFX or keyboardFX. A free trial is available for testing before purchase.
