What It Does

MaskVertexExpression lets you animate mask shapes in After Effects using expressions instead of keyframes. Each vertex can reference its position with value and its index with thisProperty.propertyGroup(1).propertyIndex, giving you mathematical control over mask deformation.

Key Features

Expression-based vertex control. Apply custom expressions to individual mask vertices. Use the value property to reference current vertex position and the property index to differentiate vertices.

Animated mask path support. Works with masks that have existing keyframes, letting you combine manual animation with expression-driven behavior.

Tangent preservation. Maintains the original mask’s tangent handles when applying expressions, keeping curves smooth where needed.

Compatible with After Effects versions from CS6 through 2025.

Who It’s For

Useful for motion graphics work requiring mathematical mask deformation, like wave patterns, ripple effects, or procedural shape variations. If you find yourself creating dozens of mask keyframes for organic deformation, expressions may offer a faster approach.
