What It Does

Anyone who builds modular toolkits or render setups in After Effects knows the problem: a comp full of 20 to 30 pre-comp layers that all look identical in the viewport. The only way to tell them apart is to hunt through the timeline, which is slow and breaks concentration.

Layer Name Tag solves this by arranging pre-comp layers into a clean grid and placing a text label above each one, pulled directly from the layer name. Rename a layer in the timeline or project panel, and the label updates automatically.

Key Features

Auto Grid. Arranges all pre-comp layers in a configurable grid layout. You can choose 2, 3, or 4 columns and set gutter spacing at 20, 40, 60, or 80px.

Add Labels. Generates text overlays above each pre-comp using the layer name. Label position, size, and color are all adjustable.

Always In Sync. Labels stay connected to their source layer. Rename anything in the timeline or project panel and the corresponding label updates live, no manual refresh needed.

Who It’s For

Motion designers working with modular animation systems, broadcast toolkits, or any project where a comp contains many pre-comp layers. If you’ve ever wasted time hunting for a specific pre-comp inside a crowded viewport, this script addresses that directly.

Compatible with After Effects 2022 (CC 22.0) and later, tested through AE 2026.

Pricing

Layer Name Tag is $19 for a single-user license. A 10-day free trial is available, limited to 3 pre-comp layers per operation. Full functionality requires a license purchase.
