What It Does
Flatten Layers converts multiple selected layers in After Effects into a single layer backed by a lossless PNG sequence. The conversion happens in the background while you continue working, and you can toggle between the original layers and the flattened version whenever you need to.
Key Features
Background processing. After selecting layers and clicking Create, the plugin generates a PNG sequence automatically while After Effects remains responsive. You don’t need to wait for a pre-render to finish before continuing your work.
Toggle between states. Switch between the original layers and the flattened version at any time. This makes it easy to adjust the source layers when needed, then flatten again.
Customizable output. Set frame rate and quality before flattening. The plugin also lets you choose a custom temp folder, view the PNG sequences folder in Explorer, and change the output path after the fact.
Visual organization. Version 2.2 added the ability to apply a random color to flattened layers, making them easier to identify in complex timelines.
Who It’s For
Useful for editors dealing with layer-heavy compositions who want to simplify their timeline without committing to a permanent pre-render. The toggle feature makes it practical for iterative work where you might need to revisit the original layers.
Pricing
Flatten Layers 2 costs $29 for a single user license. A floating server license is also available. A free trial is offered.
