What It Did
Fixel Detailizer 2 PS split images into 5 separate detail scales for independent contrast control at each frequency level. Think frequency separation, but with five bands instead of two. The interface mimicked a Hi-Fi equalizer, letting you amplify or reduce details based on their size, from fine texture to broad tonal shifts.
Unlike Unsharp Mask, which applies a single sharpening pass across the entire image, Detailizer gave you granular control over which detail frequencies to enhance. This made it possible to sharpen skin texture without over-sharpening edges, or boost global contrast without creating halos.
Key Features
5-band detail decomposition. Each band corresponded to a different detail size, from very fine to large-scale. You could amplify or suppress contrast at each level independently.
Preserve Saturation Mode. This mode applied adjustments only to luminosity, leaving color untouched. Useful when you wanted to avoid color shifts during heavy contrast work.
HDR-like effect. By setting high amplification on large-scale details, you could mimic the look of tone-mapped HDR images without actually shooting HDR.
32-bit internal processing. All calculations ran at 32-bit precision to prevent clipping and histogram distortion, even when pushing sliders to extremes.
8, 16, and 32-bit mode support. Compatible with standard RGB workflows and HDR photography alike.
Multi-CPU acceleration. The plugin used SSE and AVX vector operations to speed up processing on multi-core systems.
Scriptable filter. Fully compatible with Adobe ExtendScript, so you could integrate it into automated batch workflows.
Who It Was For
Photographers working with portraits, landscapes, or any imagery where selective detail control mattered. Retouchers needing to sharpen some areas without affecting others. Anyone frustrated by the all-or-nothing approach of traditional sharpening tools.
Pricing
When available, Fixel Detailizer 2 PS sold for $19.99 standalone or $34.99 bundled with the After Effects version. It was a one-time purchase with no subscription or trial option.
