What It Does

Expressionists turns After Effects’ basic expression editor into a proper code editor. You get syntax highlighting, line numbers, multiple cursors, and shortcuts borrowed from Sublime Text. It shows errors inline, lets you apply expressions to multiple properties at once, and includes a scripting mode for running scripts without leaving After Effects.

Key Features

Syntax highlighting and monospaced font. Code becomes readable. Color-coded syntax makes it easier to spot mistakes, and the monospaced font keeps everything aligned.

Multiple selections and block selections. Edit several lines at once. Make multiple cursors anywhere in your code, or select blocks vertically to change entire columns of text.

Inline error handling. When an expression breaks, the error appears directly on the line that caused it. No more hunting through the timeline to figure out what went wrong.

Pick whip support. Use the pick whip on properties, layers, comps, and project panel items. Works with paths and puppet pins too.

Batch expression management. Add the same expression to multiple properties in one go. Toggle expressions on/off across several layers, or clear them all at once.

Scripting mode. Write and execute scripts directly in the panel without opening the ExtendScript Toolkit or switching applications.

Sublime Text shortcuts. Familiar keyboard commands if you already use Sublime. Includes shortcuts for selecting, deleting, duplicating lines, and more.

Code folding and word highlighting. Collapse sections of code to focus on what matters. When you select a word, all instances of it highlight automatically.

Who It’s For

Useful for anyone writing expressions regularly. Motion designers building data-driven animations, technical directors rigging complex setups, or anyone tired of squinting at After Effects’ default expression field. Works best if you already know some JavaScript and want a better editing environment.
