What It Does

Explode Shape Layers splits a single shape layer into multiple individual layers, one for each shape. This gives you direct access to each element without digging through nested groups. It also works in reverse: merge multiple shape layers back into a single layer when you need to consolidate.

The script includes tools for working with Illustrator imports. Convert vector layers to After Effects shapes, remove the empty artboard artifacts that Illustrator creates, and batch-select fills or strokes by color.

Key Features

Explode. Takes a shape layer and creates a new layer for each shape it contains. Useful when you need to animate or adjust individual elements that started in the same layer.

Merge. Combines multiple shape layers into one. Preserves keyframes, expressions, label colors, and parent relationships. The merged layer inherits in/out points from the source layers.

Convert. Turns Illustrator vector layers into After Effects shape layers in one click. Centers anchor points and removes the artboard layer automatically.

Remove Artboard. Deletes the empty artboard shape that Illustrator imports often create. Also removes empty shape groups.

Select Fills / Select Strokes. One-click selection of all fills or all strokes in selected layers. Hold Shift to select fills or strokes with the same color as the currently selected property.

Options. Toggle whether exploded shapes include the original layer name, whether to center anchor points during explode, and whether Convert should auto-remove artboards.

Who It’s For

Motion designers working with Illustrator files who need cleaner, more manageable shape structures. Editors who need to reorganize or retime shape-based animations. Anyone dealing with complex shape layers who wants faster access to individual elements.
