What It Does
Control Maker generates custom control shapes for After Effects rigs by importing Illustrator files as shape layers. Instead of using generic null objects to control animated layers, you get descriptive, visual controllers that make rigs easier to understand and use.
The script includes a set of Illustrator icons, or you can point it to your own folder of .ai files (with matching 15px thumbnails). Once configured, it remembers your preferences.
Key Features
Automatic naming. Controls inherit the names of selected layers, creating one controller per layer by default.
Customizable appearance. Change fill and stroke colors with simple buttons, swap colors, or make controls invisible.
Puppet pin support. Select puppet pins and create controls for each one. By default, pins and controls remain separate. Hold Shift while clicking to apply expressions that connect each pin to its corresponding control layer.
Bulk control creation. Select multiple layers to generate individual controls for each. Hold Shift to create a single control positioned at the center of all selected layers.
Portable icons. Use the included Illustrator files or supply your own. The script stores your folder preference for future sessions.
Who It’s For
Character animators and riggers who want more readable rigs. If you’ve ever returned to a project weeks later and struggled to figure out which null controls what, this is the fix. Visual controls with meaningful shapes make rigs self-documenting.
Pricing
Control Maker uses pay-what-you-want pricing with a suggested minimum of $5. Individual users can pay any amount. Teams and businesses must pay at least the suggested price for a valid license.
