What It Does

BG Renderer MAX lets you render compositions using After Effects’ native engine while continuing to work on other projects. No need to export through Media Encoder or wait for renders to finish. The extension runs background processes that handle rendering, freeing up your main After Effects instance for active work.

The tool uses After Effects’ own rendering engine, which means output matches exactly what you’d get from the standard render queue. You can render to frame sequences (including EXR and DPX) and automatically compile them to H.264, ProRes 422 LT, or WebM video files.

Key Features

Multiprocessing with controllable CPU load. Set the number of render threads and apply a hard CPU limiter to prevent the background render from overwhelming your system. Useful when you need to balance rendering speed with keeping After Effects responsive for other work.

Sequence to video compilation. Render to image sequences for pipeline integration, then automatically compile those frames to video using built-in H.264 presets (up to 60 Mbps), ProRes 422 LT, or WebM with 320kbps AAC audio. Custom FFmpeg commands are supported for specific encoding needs.

Remote monitoring. Check render progress from any device through the free remote monitoring system. No subscription required for this feature. Track multiple renders, view progress percentages, and see completion times from a phone or another computer.

Notification integrations. Get alerts when renders finish through Discord or Slack webhooks (free), or connect to Zapier, Microsoft Power Automate, IFTTT, or Pushover for more options like SMS, Google Sheets logging, or smart home triggers. The built-in message composer lets you customize notifications with project-specific tags.

Custom render queue view. The extension adds its own render queue interface with sortable columns, exact progress indicators for each item, and quick access to output folders. Add or remove compositions from the queue without returning to After Effects’ standard render queue.

The minimalistic render indicator shows progress at the top of the interface, similar to the developer’s GifGun plugin. Right-click anywhere in the interface for context-sensitive help that links directly to relevant documentation.

Who It’s For

Motion designers working on multiple projects who need to queue renders without blocking their workspace. Useful for studios with pipeline requirements for image sequences, or anyone rendering long compositions who wants to continue working instead of waiting.

The CPU limiter makes it practical for working on a render-heavy project while simultaneously doing lighter tasks like design exploration or client revisions on a separate project.

Pricing

BG Renderer MAX uses a pay-what-you-want pricing model. The listed price is $69.99, but you can choose your own price. This is a one-time purchase with lifetime access, no subscription. Existing users of previous versions may see upgrade pricing when logged in. A trial version is available to test before purchase.
