What It Does

AEPathfinder adds vector shape operations that After Effects doesn’t include natively. While the built-in Merge Paths lets you combine shapes, it can’t divide, trim, crop, or outline vector paths. This plugin fills that gap with one-click shape operations that work on single layers or multiple shape layers at once.

Select a single layer, and you get direct access to After Effects’ standard merging options. Select multiple shape layers, and AEPathfinder creates a new processed shape layer while keeping your sources intact. After processing, use the split shapes feature to separate results into individual elements for animation.

Key Features

Divide. Cuts shapes at intersections, creating separate elements from overlapping paths. Useful for UI animations where menu icons or buttons need to transition between states.

Trim. Removes portions of shapes where they overlap. Helpful when building complex logo marks that need mathematical precision before animation.

Outline. Converts fill shapes into strokes with precise width control. Ideal for stroke-based reveal animations.

Intersect, Subtract, Exclude. Standard boolean operations across multiple layers. Work like vector editing tools but output editable shape layers ready for animation.

Non-destructive workflow. Generates new shape layers, leaving originals untouched. Hold Shift, Alt, or Cmd/Ctrl during processing to automatically delete source layers after the operation.

Handles up to 30 paths per layer (After Effects’ limit). Supports parametric shapes like rectangles and ellipses alongside custom paths.

Who It’s For

Motion designers who work with vector-based graphics, especially UI animations, icon reveals, and kinetic typography. Anyone who’s needed to split a complex shape into animated components or create precise masking relationships between vector layers.

Pricing

Pay what you want, with a suggested price of $29.99 for individual users. Businesses must pay the suggested price for commercial licensing. Compatible with After Effects 2020 through 2025.
